Common Questions
How accurate are KiwiSaver calculators?
Our calculators use real data from FMA reports and historical returns. However, future returns cannot be guaranteed. We use conservative estimates (5-7% annual returns) based on historical averages. Your actual returns may be higher or lower.
What contribution rate should I use?
The default is 3%, but you can contribute up to 10% of your gross salary. Many financial advisors recommend at least 6% (3% you + 3% employer) to maximize the employer match. Higher earners may choose 4-10% to accelerate savings.
How much difference do fees really make?
A material difference over long horizons. Illustrative — sub-1-percentage-point fee gaps compound across 40-year horizons and can shift the final balance by a six-figure amount even when gross fund return is identical. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Use our fees calculator to model your own situation.
Should I use a growth or conservative fund?
It depends on your age and risk tolerance. Generally: Growth/Aggressive funds for 40+ years until retirement, Balanced for 20-40 years, Conservative for 10-20 years, Defensive for under 10 years or if buying your first home soon. Use our comparison tool to explore different options.
